What is a type rating?

A type rating (or type endorsement) is the qualification that allows an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer to certify maintenance on a specific aircraft type — an Airbus A320, a Boeing 737, an ATR 72 and so on. Your basic B1 or B2 licence establishes broad competence; the type rating adds the detailed, aircraft-specific knowledge needed to sign for work on that machine.

Why engineers need them

Certifying staff must be current on the exact type they release. Without the relevant type rating on your licence, you cannot legally issue a certificate of release to service for that aircraft, no matter how experienced you are. That is why type ratings are the currency of an AME’s career.

How type training works

A type rating is earned through an approved type-training course combining theoretical instruction on the aircraft’s systems with practical, hands-on training. The theory covers the specific systems, limitations and procedures of the type; the practical element ensures you can apply that knowledge on the actual aircraft. On completion and with the required experience, the type is endorsed on your licence.

Groups and endorsements

Different aircraft can be added to a licence as individual type ratings or, in some cases, as group ratings covering similar aircraft. Building a portfolio of endorsements on the fleets your local operators fly is the fastest route to indispensability.

The career and pay premium

Each type rating widens the range of aircraft you can certify and, with it, your value. Engineers who stack in-demand endorsements — particularly on high-volume fleets like the A320neo family or 737 MAX — move up the pay scale quickly and enjoy far greater mobility between employers.

Think of your basic licence as the entry ticket and type ratings as the upgrades that determine how far and how fast your career travels.
