CHAPTER 1 · Syllabus 4.1.1 (a) · level 2
Semiconductor Materials and the PN Junction
Why silicon and germanium are neither conductors nor insulators, how electrons and holes carry current, how doping makes N-type and P-type material, and what happens at a PN junction when it is unbiased, forward biased and reverse biased.

CHAPTER 2 · Syllabus 4.1.1 (a) · level 2
Diodes: Symbols, Characteristics and Ratings
How to read a diode's symbol and markings, its forward and reverse characteristic, the ratings on a data sheet (PIV, forward current, power, temperature, frequency, leakage), diodes in series and parallel, rectifier circuits including the aircraft TRU, and how to test a diode with a multimeter.

CHAPTER 3 · Syllabus 4.1.1 (a) · level 2
Special Diodes, Thyristors, LEDs and Photodiodes
The diodes built for a special job: Zener regulators, Schottky, LEDs, photodiodes and optocouplers, varactors and varistors — and the four-layer thyristor family (Shockley diode, SCR, triac and diac) that switches large currents and latches on.

CHAPTER 4 · Syllabus 4.1.2 (a) · level 1
Transistors
Bipolar transistors from the inside out — NPN and PNP construction and symbols, how a small base current controls a large collector current, the three operating regions, ratings and packages — then FETs, MOSFETs, CMOS, UJTs and the other transistor types you will meet in aircraft equipment.
🎬 10 slides📖 ~35 min🃏 26✅ 26 Q

CHAPTER 5 · Syllabus 4.1.3 (a) · level 1
Integrated Circuits and Logic Gates
What an integrated circuit is and how its pins are numbered, digital logic levels (TTL and CMOS, positive and negative logic), the seven basic gates with their symbols, truth tables and Boolean expressions, ANSI and IEC symbols, and how gate logic appears in aircraft warning and interlock systems.
🎬 8 slides📖 ~35 min🃏 24✅ 24 Q

CHAPTER 6 · Syllabus 4.1.3 (a) · level 1
Linear Circuits and Operational Amplifiers
Linear (analogue) integrated circuits and their star, the operational amplifier: its symbol and pins, the ideal op-amp, the comparator, inverting and non-inverting amplifiers, the voltage follower, summing and differential amplifiers — and, as a B2 extension, integrators, differentiators and positive versus negative feedback.
🎬 9 slides📖 ~30 min🃏 19✅ 21 Q

CHAPTER 7 · Syllabus 4.2 · level 1
Printed Circuit Boards
What a printed circuit board does and how it is built — laminates, copper, single-sided, double-sided and multilayer boards, plated-through holes and vias — how components are mounted (through-hole and surface-mount), board features, conformal coating, ESD precautions, typical defects and who may repair a board.
🎬 9 slides📖 ~30 min🃏 23✅ 20 Q

CHAPTER 8 · Syllabus 4.3 (a) · level 1
Servomechanisms: Principles and Sensors
Open- and closed-loop control, what makes a servomechanism, and the words examiners love — feedback, follow-up, error, null, overshoot, damping, deadband and hunting — plus the sensors that close the loop: analogue transducers (potentiometers, LVDTs, RVDTs), proximity switches, digital tachometers and encoders.
🎬 8 slides📖 ~35 min🃏 25✅ 26 Q

CHAPTER 9 · Syllabus 4.3 (a) · level 1
Synchros, Resolvers and Remote Transmitters
How aircraft send an angle down a wire: AC synchros (construction, torque and control systems, differentials), resolvers, the DC selsyn, the Magnesyn inductance transmitter and capacitance transmitters such as fuel quantity probes — plus, as a B2 extension, E and I pick-offs and what happens when synchro leads are swapped.

CHAPTER 10 · Addendum · not in the Module 4 paper
Extra: Radio Communication, ELT and ADS-B
A bonus chapter matching the radio addendum of many Module 4 textbooks: radio waves and frequency bands, how they travel, AM, FM and SSB, transmitters, receivers and transceivers, antennas and transmission lines — and two systems every engineer meets: ADS-B and the emergency locator transmitter.

The Module 4 paper

Category B1: 20 multiple-choice questions in 25 minutes (B3 also sits 20 in 25). Categories B2 and B2L: 40 questions in 50 minutes. Category A does not take Module 4. That is a nominal 75 seconds per question, pass mark 75%, no negative marking. The per-sub-module numbers in the table are the recommended distribution in the AMC to Part-66 / CAR-66 Appendix II.

B1 depth — and what B2 adds

B1 needs level 2 for diodes (symbols, characteristics, parameters, the PN junction, SCRs, LEDs, photodiodes and rectifier diodes) and level 1 — a familiarisation — for transistors, integrated circuits, printed circuit boards and servomechanisms. B2 goes deeper: diode circuits (clippers, clampers, voltage multipliers), amplifier classes, op-amp integrators and differentiators, PID controllers and synchro fault-finding. Those are flagged as B2 extension where the course mentions them.

How to use this course

1) Watch the chapter explainer for the big picture. 2) Read the lesson and study every diagram — Module 4 questions love symbols and characteristic curves. 3) Walk the mind map and flip the flashcards the next day. 4) Take the chapter quiz until you score 75% or more. 5) When every chapter is green, sit the timed mock exam and review every wrong answer.
