Maintenance Procedures PLAN Programme + due list → ACCOMPLISH Data + resources → VERIFY Checks + tests → RECORD Status + release Hours · cycles · calendar · configuration
Conceptual illustration. Use the applicable maintenance data for actual limits.

Planning and the maintenance programme

Maintenance planning connects the applicable programme with aircraft utilisation, calendar exposure and component status. Manufacturer planning material and review-board outputs inform the operator's programme; a planning document is not itself a task-level maintenance procedure. Establish due work, resources, access, tooling and downtime, then issue controlled work cards. Consider hours, cycles and calendar limits separately. Schedule work so tasks are completed within their requirements, and update status after accomplishment. A convenient maintenance visit does not permit a hard limit to be exceeded.

Recall check

What does maintenance planning establish? Required work, due status and resources within applicable limits.

Modifications and technical data

A modification changes an aircraft's approved configuration and needs the applicable approved design and embodiment data. Check effectivity, parts, instructions and interactions with other modifications. A service bulletin and an airworthiness directive serve different roles; the directive's applicability and compliance requirements must be evaluated. Embodiment can affect weight and balance, equipment lists, maintenance instructions and records. Verify the final configuration and complete required tests. A well-executed physical change is incomplete if its required technical records and downstream updates are missing.

Recall check

What must be evaluated when embodying a modification? Approved data, effectivity and affected configuration/records.

Stores and component eligibility

Stores control preserves identity, condition and traceability. Check part and serial numbers, release documentation, shelf life, preservation and storage conditions before issue. Separate serviceable, unserviceable and quarantined items. A certificate or tag must match the actual item and permitted application; paperwork does not override a visible defect or missing life history. Protect components from ESD, moisture and physical damage as appropriate. Counterfeit or suspected unapproved parts require the organisation's reporting and segregation process.

Recall check

Why are quarantined parts separated from serviceable stock? Prevent accidental issue before their status is resolved.

Work records and release

Record what was performed, the data used, parts installed and results required by the task. A release confirms the applicable maintenance was completed in accordance with the relevant requirements within the signatory's authorisation. It is not a blanket statement that every possible defect has been ruled out. Open work, incomplete tests and relevant limitations must be handled through the approved process. A component release document does not alone establish correct installation or the aircraft's release to service.

Recall check

What does authorised maintenance release require? Completed applicable work, required verification and proper records.

Interface with aircraft operations

Crew reports, technical-log entries and maintenance-control communication link operations with maintenance. Clearly describe defects, actions, restrictions and deferred items. An MEL allows specified operational relief under controlled conditions; it is not a repair instruction or unrestricted permission to ignore a defect. Required maintenance and operational procedures, interval controls and placards still apply. Handover should identify completed, pending and interrupted work so the next shift does not rely on assumptions. Coordinate power applications and tests with other activities.

Recall check

What is an MEL primarily used for? Controlled dispatch relief for specified inoperative items.

Quality control and quality assurance

Quality control checks that work or product meets requirements through inspections and tests. Quality assurance provides systematic confidence through processes such as independent audits and corrective-action monitoring. Both rely on clear standards and effective reporting. An audit does not substitute for a required task inspection, and a passed inspection does not prove every organisational process is sound. Address root causes of repeated discrepancies rather than only correcting each isolated example. Personnel competence and authorisation remain essential to both systems.

Recall check

How does quality assurance differ from a task inspection? It evaluates the system and processes that provide confidence in compliance.

Life-limited components

A life-limited item has an established retirement limit in hours, cycles, calendar time or a specified combination. Track its identity and accumulated life across installation and removal. Remaining life cannot be reliably inferred from appearance. Missing or uncertain history requires controlled resolution; do not assign zero time to make a component usable. Distinguish retirement limits from overhaul intervals and on-condition inspection requirements. Verify eligibility before installation and update aircraft and component status records accurately.

Recall check

What is essential for a life-limited component? Verified identity, accumulated life and remaining permitted life.

Additional procedures and error capture

Maintenance procedures also control critical tasks, duplicate inspections, interruption recovery, shift handover and checking that tools and temporary items are removed. Use the organisation's approved process to prevent a single error from reaching operation. Verify locks, caps, covers and restored isolation points at close-up. Record actual completion rather than signing ahead. Where a task is interrupted, leave an unambiguous status and restart point. Reporting errors and hazards promptly supports correction and prevention; hiding them makes later diagnosis less reliable.

Recall check

What is essential when handing over interrupted maintenance? Clear identification of completed and outstanding steps.

Apply the knowledge

Work through these examples before starting the quiz. Explain why the other choices would not meet the requirement.

A life-limited part has no reliable accumulated-life record. What is appropriate?

Quarantine or resolve its status through the approved process — Appearance cannot establish accumulated cycles or hours.

An audit finds repeat tool-control failures. What should corrective action address?

The causes and effectiveness of the control system — Repeated discrepancies indicate a process issue needing follow-up.

A modification changes installed equipment mass. What additional record may need updating?

Weight and balance and the equipment/configuration records — Configuration changes can affect mass, moment and maintenance information.

A shift ends with a functional test incomplete. What is correct?

Record and hand over the incomplete test clearly — Incomplete work must remain visible in the controlled maintenance status.
